jump start the judiciary!

We just learned yesterday that Robert Mueller, the special prosecutor, is doing that very thing.  Congress needs to step it up as well.  The more information we have, the more complete the picture will be, and the better the outcome -- a robust presidency not for sale, and the survival of our democracy.

Last weekend, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) called on the Senate Judiciary Committee to investigate Trump’s likely obstruction of justice when he fired James Comey.

Feinstein also said that the committee should hear additional testimony from officials Comey said he spoke with about his interactions with Trump, including Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who refused to disclose additional information about his conversations with the president on Tuesday.

Call the Senate AND House Judiciary Committees and ask every member to support Feinstein’s demands. We need to know the truth.  If, as Trump himself admits, he fired Comey in order to shut down Comey’s investigation of the Trump campaign’s possible collusion with Russia, he has committed a CRIME and must be held accountable. Similarly, if the committee were to find that Sessions withheld additional information, he must immediately resign.

It’s time to Jumpstart the Judiciary -- and then Jam it!

*Note: look at the committee members in the Senate and House. If you are a constituent of any member, that should be your first, and daily, call. You can also ALWAYS call Sen. Schumer; as the Minority Leader, he has sway over committee actions even if he is not an official member.

Script: Hi, my name is… and I’m a concerned citizen/ constituent. I’m calling because I believe the president obstructed justice by threatening and then firing James Comey. I ask that Sen./ Rep._____________ issue a public statement in support of Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s call for a Judiciary Committee investigation into his actions.

URGENT ACTION

WE WANT THE TRUTH. NOW.

DEMAND AN INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION INTO TRUMP’S TIES TO RUSSIA!

On Tuesday, Trump abruptly FIRED FBI Director Comey, who was tasked with investigating Russian interference in last year’s presidential elections. Despite feeble claims that this has to do with Comey’s handling of his investigation into Hillary Clinton, there is clearly more to this story.

Comey’s dismissal also means that Trump now gets to handpick a new FBI Director who will be responsible for overseeing the investigation into his administration’s connections with Russia. This is laughable.

That’s not all.

Earlier this week, we learned that Trump sat on his hands for 18 days after his White House Counsel was informed that the National Security Advisor had lied to senior officials in the Trump administration and was vulnerable to blackmail by Russia. That’s EIGHTEEN UNEXPLAINED DAYS OF INACTION.  And, at this point, the connections between the Trump team and Russia create a tangled web of overlapping interests that are so difficult to unpack  that we need complicated graphics like this one to understand the depth of his ties.  [Graphic Source: https://swalwell.house.gov/…/russia-trump-his-administratio…]

Only Congress can fix this. Congress alone has the power to create a special commission to conduct an investigation that is truly independent, bipartisan, and unbiased. This is what we need, and we need it now.

Precedent exists for this type of congressional action. In the aftermath of 9/11, Congress and President George W. Bush set up a special commission to investigate the attacks. Moreover, members of both parties support an independent investigation, including Senator John McCain (R-AZ) and Richard Burr (R-NC), Chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Members of Congress have already introduced bills in the House and Senate that propose setting up such a commission. Rep. Eric Swalwell’s bill, H.R. 356, the Protecting Our Democracy Act, already has bipartisan support, including co-sponsorship by the entire Democratic caucus. Senator Ben Cardin’s bill, S.27, has 24 Democratic co-sponsors. Both bills would establish a bipartisan commission of independent experts to thoroughly investigate Russia, the Trump administration, and the 2016 election.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Call your senators and representatives today and every day. Tell them:

CONGRESS MUST APPOINT A SPECIAL COMMISSION TO INVESTIGATE RUSSIAN INTERFERENCE IN THE 2016 ELECTION

When you call this week, you should call your senators’ and rep’s district offices.

Every senator, every state, every office, every phone number:

Script for Members of Congress: Hello, my name is… and I am a constituent from...I was shocked to hear  that President Trump fired FBI Director Comey while the FBI is investigating the Trump team and that Trump may have actually directed AG Sessions to find a reason to fire Comey last week. This, combined with the 18 days the White House waited to act on urgent information about the national security threat posed by Michael Flynn, should alarm anyone who believes in truth and Democracy. These actions undermine the basic principles of our government , and threaten our most cherished values. Will you defend America by supporting an independent bipartisan investigation into Russian tampering in our elections, and co-sponsor the Protecting Our Democracy Act (H.R. 356)?

Script for Senators: Hello, my name is… and I am a constituent from...I was shocked to hear  that President Trump fired FBI Director Comey while the FBI is investigating the Trump team and that Trump may have actually directed AG Sessions to find a reason to fire Comey last week. This, combined with the 18 days the White House waited to act on urgent information about the national security threat posed by Michael Flynn, should alarm anyone who believes in truth and Democracy. These actions undermine the basic principles of our government  shake the very core of our democracy as a free and open country, and threaten challenge our most cherished values. I am also concerned by the fact that during Sally Yates’ hearing, Senate Republicans failed to ask any tough questions on why Michael Flynn was not immediately fired when the White House learned he covered up his call with Russia’s Ambassador. I no longer have faith that Congress can be impartial on this issue. Will you stand up for our national security and commit to supporting an independent investigation into Russian interference by co-sponsoring Senator Cardin’s bill, S. 27?

For Democrats/Republicans already co-sponsoring: Hello, my name is… and I am a constituent from...I was shocked to hear that President Trump fired FBI Director Comey while the FBI is investigating the Trump team and that Trump may have actually directed AG Sessions to find a reason to fire Comey last week. This, combined with the 18 days the White House waited to act on urgent information about the national security threat posed by Michael Flynn, signals the severity of the corruption at the heart of the Trump administration. These actions undermine the basic principles of our government, and threaten our very democracy. Thank you for supporting an independent investigation into Russian interference. We must keep the momentum going or an independent investigation will never happen. Will you promise to keep fighting for the American people by continuing to publicly press for an independent bipartisan commission into Russian interference in the 2016 election?
