current action: say no to the acha!

Tell the Senate: SAY NO TO TRUMPCARE

Yesterday, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office concluded that the AHCA (Trumpcare) bill that passed the House would leave 23 million MORE Americans uninsured by 2026.

That’s TWENTY-THREE MILLION PEOPLE who currently have health insurance who would completely LOSE coverage over the next eight years, thanks to House Republicans and Donald Trump.

And don’t forget that this same bill also allows states to opt out of the requirement to provide essential health benefits, which include maternity care, mental health care, and prescription coverage. It also eliminates subsidies that enable low-income Americans to afford health insurance premiums and allows insurers to charge older Americans five times as much as younger Americans (previously, the cap was three times).

The bill also SLASHES funding for Medicaid by a whopping $880 billion. Medicaid supports programs for millions of Americans, including programs in schools for children with disabilities and services for the elderly. These cuts mean that millions of needy children and adults would lose essential services and care -- and that’s IN ADDITION TO the 23 million people who would lose their insurance.

It should be clear to ANYONE WHO HAS READ THE BILL that the AHCA is nothing more than a cruel ploy to push through a massive tax cut for the rich at the expense of the safety and well-being of millions of vulnerable people.

CALL YOUR SENATORS and tell them to protect the tens of millions of people who depend on the ACA and MEDICAID nationwide. While you're at it, CALL YOUR REPS AGAIN and tell them just what you think.

Every senator, every state, every office, every phone number:

Your reps: http://www.house.gov/representatives/find/

Script for senators: Hi, my name is...and I’m a constituent from… I am calling because I am very concerned about the millions of people like me who could lose health care and essential services if the AHCA becomes law. (Insert personal details as you feel comfortable: I receive care through the ACA or Medicaid, I have a pre-existing condition, I have a disability/a child with a disability, I work in health care or in schools, etc.)

I ask that the senator aggressively oppose ANY legislation that makes it harder for constituents to access affordable insurance or cuts funding for Medicaid and vote against any bill that offers a tax cut to the wealthy at the expense of working Americans, the sick, and disabled.

Script for reps who voted NO: Hi, my name is...and I’m a constituent from… I’m calling to say thank you for voting against the AHCA. Please continue to fight this disastrous bill.

Script for reps who voted YES: Hi, my name is...and I’m a constituent from… I am appalled that the congressperson voted FOR the AHCA, which the CBO determinedDonaldwould result in 23 million people losing their health insurance. (Insert personal details as you feel comfortable: I receive care through the ACA or Medicaid, I have a pre-existing condition, I have a disability/ a child with a disability, I work in health care or in schools, etc.)

This bill is nothing more than a cruel ploy to push through a massive tax cut for the rich at the expense of the safety and well-being of millions of vulnerable people. Your support of this bill is inexcusable and I am committed to working with my community to vote you out of office at the earliest opportunity.

call the Senate Intelligence Committee

The Senate Intelligence Committee has been investigating Trump’s Russia ties for months.
AND THEY HAVE NOTHING TO SHOW FOR IT.

On Monday the Daily Beast and Yahoo reported that the Committee has not even hired any full time investigators, nor subpoenaed any documents nor conducted interviews of any key witnesses, although CNN reports that this week two investigators were hired, and that some witnesses have been interviewed and documents reviewed.   It has no public hearings scheduled.  The Chair, Richard Burr (R-NC), has failed to respond to requests from the panel’s Democrats that he sign letters requesting important information. Meanwhile, committee member Ron Wyden (D-OR) has expressed “serious concerns” that the committee needs to move more quickly, be more transparent, and devote more resources to the investigation.

First, CALL YOUR SENATORS AND REPS and demand an independent investigation.

Every senator, every state, every office, every phone:

Senator Script: Hi, my name is… and I’m a constituent from… I am calling because I am alarmed by reports that the Senate Intelligence Committee investigation into Trump’s ties to Russia is understaffed and going nowhere. Neither the House nor Senate committees have demonstrated their fitness to lead this urgent investigation. We need an independent bipartisan commission immediately. I ask that the senator withhold consent for all Senate business until such an investigation is launched.

THEN CALL THE COMMITTEE MEMBERS and tell them to pick up the pace!

Senate Intelligence Committee: https://www.intelligence.senate.gov/about/committee-members-115th-congress-2017-2018

Do you live in: Arkansas, California, Florida, Idaho, North Carolina, Maine, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon,Texas, Virginia, West Virginia?

If you’re a constituent of any of these senators, be sure you make that clear when you are calling. And if you know people who live in any of these states, share this with them and tell them to make a call TODAY.

Committee Script: Hi, my name is… and I am a concerned citizen/ constituent. I am calling because I am alarmed by reports that the Senate Intelligence Committee investigation into Trump’s ties to Russia is understaffed and going nowhere. There is extensive evidence that the Trump administration may have colluded with Russia to undermine the 2016 election and we need to know the truth. This is an emergency -- not something we can wait years to discover. I ask that the senator do everything in his/ her power to push this investigation forward by issuing subpoenas, hiring qualified full-time staff, and conducting public interviews of key witnesses.

We need to know the truth and we will NOT be distracted.

ongoing action: Conflicts of interest

Call out Donald Trump on his innumerable conflicts of interest!

Tell Congress that he must release his tax returns and fully divest from his businesses or face impeachment.

Trump has taken office with unprecedented conflicts of interest. He is in debt to the tune of millions of dollars to foreign countries, and has already taken actions this week that benefit him financially:

- Trump’s unconstitutional executive order banning immigration and travel from (originally seven, now six) predominantly Muslim countries excludes those countries where he has existing business interests, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey and more.

- Trump signed orders clearing the way for the disputed Dakota Access oil pipelines to proceed and owns up to $50,000 in stock in the company building the DAPL project.

- The Department of Defense announced its plan to rent space from the Trump Organization. Those are OUR tax dollars going into Trump’s pocket.

- Trump used his Twitter account and his staff (Kellyanne Conway) to attack Nordstrom after their decision to not sell his daughter’s products.

Many of Trump’s businesses earn revenue from foreign government-owned entities and diplomats. The Constitution’s Emoluments Clause is intended to prevent presidents from accepting gifts or financial gain from foreign governments.

But just this week, China granted preliminary approval for 38 Trump company trademarks, 35 of which are in the president’s own name. Dan Plane, a director at a Hong Kong-based intellectual property consultancy firm, commented that he had never seen so many trademarks approved so quickly. Trump is clearly benefiting financially from his presidency and is in likely violation of the emoluments clause.

Moreover, with Trump refusing to release his tax returns or divest from these business entanglements, we can only assume that his presidency will continue to violate this clause -- which merits impeachment.

It’s time to flood the lines!

Who to call:

1. The House Oversight Committee and Jason Chaffetz: (202) 225-5074 or (202) 225-7751
Script: I’m calling to demand that the House Oversight Committee conduct a bipartisan investigation into Trump’s financial records and tax returns, conflicts of interest, and a potential violation of the Emoluments Clause. Since he has refused to release his tax returns or fully divest from his business interests, it is likely that he has already violated this constitutional rule. Please also fully investigate Trump’s use of White House Staff to promote his daughter’s product line and ensure that those staff members are appropriately penalized for this illegal activity.

You can also find phone numbers for the other members of the House Oversight Committee here:
https://oversight.house.gov/subcommittee/full-committee/

2. The Office of Government Ethics: (202) 482-9300
Script: I’m calling to ask that the Office of Government Ethics begin a bipartisan investigation into Trump’s financial records and tax returns, conflicts of interest, and a potential violation of the Emoluments Clause. Since he has refused to release his tax returns or fully divest from his business interests, it is likely that he has already violated this constitutional rule.

3.Your Member of Congress: http://www.house.gov/representatives/find/
Script: I’m calling to ask that you publicly demand a bipartisan investigation into Trump’s financial records and tax returns, conflicts of interest, and a potential violation of the emoluments clause. Since he has refused to release his tax returns or fully divest from his business interests, it is likely that he has already violated this constitutional rule.

I am also calling to ask if Rep. __________ has co-sponsored Representative Katherine Clark’s Presidential Accountability Act.

If Yes: Thank you. Please work to ensure that this bill passes in the house.

If No: As Clark’s press release notes, “Every recent president in modern history has taken steps to ensure his financial interests do not conflict with the needs of the American people.” Donald Trump should do the same. We need to be able to trust that the President's decisions are based on the best interests of the American people -- not his financial interests. Please cosponsor this bill immediately. [Note: the following Members of Congress have signed on to this bill: Velazquez, Nadler, Meng, Meeks, Clarke, Engel, Slaughter, Serrano.]

4.Your Senator: https://www.senate.gov/senators/contact/
Gillibrand: (212) 688-6262 (202) 224-4451
Schumer: (212) 486-4430 (315) 423-5471

Script: I’m calling to ask the senator to renew calls for the release of the President’s tax returns. We need to be able to trust that the President's decisions are based on the best interests of the American people -- not his financial interests. I am extremely concerned by the many indications that Trump’s actions have been motivated by his own (and his family’s) financial gain. Please make this a priority.

I also ask that the senator issue a public statement demanding a full Senate investigation into Trump’s possible violation of the Constitutional Emoluments clause. Given his numerous entanglements with foreign businesses and leaders it is almost certain he has already violated this clause. Until an investigation is launched, I ask that the Senator withhold consent for every vote held on the Senate floor.

ongoing action: sessions

Attorney General Jeff Sessions lied under oath and in writing about his contacts with Russia.

National Security Advisor Michael Flynn colluded with Russia and broke the law.

The Trump campaign had secret contacts with Russia before the election.

Russia hacked our election with the intention of getting Trump elected.

THIS IS A LONG LIST.

But most Republicans just want us to sit quietly, not ask questions and accept the unprecedented illegality, corruption, and dishonesty at the heart of this administration.

The GOP needs to WAKE UP.

We need a REAL investigation. Now.

Senate Democrat Richard Blumenthal has vowed to block the nominee for Deputy Attorney General (who would be responsible for leading any Justice Department investigation of the administration’s ties to Russia) unless he promises to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Russia's involvement in the presidential election.

THIS is the leadership we need.

Call your Senators and demand that they follow suit. We need obstruction. That means no confirmations, no votes, no more compromising until Jeff Sessions resigns and Trump’s ties to Russia are fully and publicly investigated.

For all Senators in all states click HERE.

Script: Hello, my name is… and I’m a constituent from… I am calling because I am alarmed about the evidence of the entire Trump administration’s ties to Russia and what that means for global peace, the environment, and the legitimacy of our elections and government.

Senate Democrat Richard Blumenthal has vowed to block the nominee for Deputy Attorney General unless  the nominee promises to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Russia's reported involvement with the presidential election.

I ask that you follow Senator Blumenthal’s example and publicly commit to blocking every upcoming appointment until Jeff Sessions resigns and the Trump administration’s ties to Russia are fully and publicly investigated by an independent commission or special prosecutor.
